When spiritual icon, best-selling author, and mbg collective member Deepak Chopra, M.D., went to record the mindbodygreen podcast earlier this year, he offered some thought-provoking ideas on what makes for a fulfilling, soulful life—the small steps we can take to become more present and at peace in our bodies, every day. Chopra explains the four intentions that guide his every action.

Here are the four intentions that Deepak Chopra chooses to personally work towards for a more joyful and meaningful life. Follow his life advice for yourself and watch it work for you:

1. Joyful, energetic body.

In order to have a joyful, energetic body, he stays clear of anything that may cause his body harm. He chooses to practice yoga, follows a plant-based diet, and tries to walk 10,000 steps everyday. He also aims to avoid toxins as far as possible – This includes not just toxic environments, but also toxic people and toxic jobs as he believes exposure to these toxins can cause illness in the body.

2. Loving, compassionate heart.

We all want love, so to have it, all you have to do is practice the four A’s:

Attention – Actually listen to others when they speak.

Acceptance – Don’t be tempted to change others, only give advice when it’s asked of you.

Appreciation – Acknowledge the good that others do.

Affection – Show that you care about others.

Simply doing these four things will not only make others feel good, but it will start to make you feel good as well.

3. Quiet, alert mind.

A reflective, quiet, alert mind is the aim here, not necessarily a ‘positive’ mind as one can have a positive mind yet be completely turbulent, which can be a type of stress in itself. A mind that’s reflective and alert allows you to make better use of your intuition. You are more capable of manifesting things at the right time without anticipation or regret, and in this way your life simply flows.

4. Lightness of being.

Deepak believes that lightness of being is simply living with no resistance, no anticipation, no regrets, purely experiencing the moment. This opens you up to what many call ‘flow’, or a state of transcendence, and in this state you surrender yourself to the mystery, because it’s all a mystery – There’s no explanation for why the universe exists or even why you exist, there’s just you as a being. The rest is a story.

If you want to know how to be happy, feel an increased sense of purpose & fulfilment, and obtain optimal health, starting with these four intentions may just help you get there.
