Fun fact: Vitamin D was discovered in the 1920’s while searching for the cure for Rickets. Within 10 years, a massive change had taken place to fortify foods with Vitamin D to help our bodies absorb calcium. You can find it in Vitamin D-rich foods like salmon, herring, sardines, cod liver oil, canned tuna, egg yolks, and mushrooms. Because it’s in charge of various health functions, a deficiency in Vitamin D puts you more at risk of allergies, flu and respiratory ailments.

What is Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is basically a group of fat-soluble secosteroids (a type of steroid with a “broken” ring) that help boost intestinal absorption of calcium, magnesium, and phosphate in the body, amongst others. The most important compounds in the vitamin D group are vitamin D₃ and vitamin D₂.

What is The Role of Vitamin D in The Body?

As we now know, one of the most important compounds in the Vitamin D group is Vitamin D3. This helps with the maintenance of strong bones and healthy teeth as well as the absorption of calcium and phosphorus. One long-term study discovered that more Vitamin D3 can lower the risk of infection, while another showed that low Vitamin D levels are associated with more sneezing and sinus infections.

Can I Get Vitamin D From The Sun?

Of course, your skin also makes Vitamin D3 when it’s exposed to sunlight. Radiation from the sun activates the formation of D3, similar to plants and mushrooms. If you spend a lot of time out in the sun without sunblock, you’re probably full of Vitamin D. At least depending on how close you are to the equator. However, if you spend too much time in the sun, your body will eventually start producing less of it.

Should I Take Vitamin D Tablets?

If you’re not sure about your Vitamin D intake or are interested in supplementing with something like Releaf Vitamin D3, then talk to your health care practitioner about adding it into your daily diet. It’ll help contribute to the maintenance of strong bones and teeth and in the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, like we learned above. It also helps to maintain the normal functioning of the immune system. Sounds good?
