There are a lot of differences between pro athletes and…the rest of us.

At some point in high school, you probably accepted the fact that you’ll never break the 100-meter sprint record or go to the Olympics except to sit in the stands and watch on in awe. However, new research into gut bacteria suggests you could at least improve your spinning class endurance: “…the microbiome could be relevant for applications in endurance, recovery, and maybe even mental toughness,” says Jonathan Scheiman, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School.

The study looked at the microbiomes of elite athletes and identified which gut bacteria might be aiding their impressive performances: “The bugs in our gut affect our energy metabolism, making it easier to break down carbohydrates, protein, and fibre. They’re also involved in inflammation and neurological function,” explained Scheiman.

Ultimately, the research points to the fact that professional athletes generally have similar, specific strands of gut microbiome. For us non-athletes, this means that the little guys in our gut could help us get through those early morning workouts a little easier.
