Recent research has found that Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Zinc, and Echinacea play a vital role in preventing and treating the common cold by helping to maintain a healthy immune system.

The scientific review included 82 eligible studies of the preventive role of these nutrients; revealing that regular supplementation (1 to 2 g/day) of vitamin C can reduce the duration (in adults by 8%, in children by 14%) and the severity of the common cold.

The research also found that supplementing zinc shortens the duration of colds by approximately 33% if taken within 24 hours of experiencing symptoms.

Supplementing Vitamin D proved to help prevent the common cold overall, with patients deficient in the vitamin experiencing the most benefits. Prophylactic treatment of 2400mg per day of echinacea appeared to be beneficial for both the prevention and treatment of common colds.

The conclusion? The current evidence of efficacy for zinc, vitamins D and C, and Echinacea strongly suggests the combination is useful both for the prevention and the treatment of the common cold.
