Oil pulling, an ancient Indian practice that consists of swishing oil in your mouth for anywhere from three to 20 minutes, is the easy, cost-effective oral hygiene regime on everyone’s lips.
Coconut oil is the preferred oil of choice because of its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, which clean out the harmful bacteria while allowing the good bacteria to live, (unlike most mouthwash products).
Apart from deep-cleaning our mouths and boosting gum health, coconut oil pulling also whitens our teeth and amps up digestion. This is because digestion begins the moment food touches our lips. As we eat, our tongues detect the micro- and macronutrients of our food and let our bodies know which enzymes are necessary for digestion. If the surface of your tongue isn’t clean, it’s going to struggle to distinguish between all the different types of food it’s just been confronted with, causing our digestive systems to struggle with breaking down the nutrients we’ve just consumed. This shows that oral health is essential for overall health since everything in the body is connected.
How and when to pull in:
Most experts suggest morning as being the best time to start your coconut oil pulling routine, as it helps shake up and pull out all those dormant germs that sit in the mouth as we sleep. That being said, you can oil pull before bed if you prefer to.
Here’s how to start:
Swish 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth for as long as possible. Start with just 2 or 3 minutes (or as little as 10 seconds), working your way up to 20 minutes.
Spit the oil out into a bin, not the sink as this could clog your drain. Don’t swallow it either, as the oil as it is now full of unwanted toxins, bacteria, and plaque.
Rinse your mouth with warm water and brush your teeth.
